Libraries in communities

In this breakout session we will be looking at the role of libraries in communities. The following "thought-triggers" may help to stimulate ideas and conversation:

  • What is our definition of a community – especially in light of online communities and multicultural communities. What are the qualities of a community?
  • What responsibilities do libraries have towards communities?
  • Are libraries able to reach out to every community with limited resources, and if not, how should they prioritise between communities.
  • Which approach is best - the development of niche / boutique / special libraries to fit specific community needs, or one-stop-shops / all-inclusive libraries?
